What is Infertility?
Infertility is essentially when a couple cannot conceive after intercourse, in most cases, infertility, especially in men, is a hidden problem. Couples only realize that there may be an issue with their fertility after trying to conceive for more than two years on average, however doctors around the globe agree that if a couple cannot conceive after 6-12 months, they should start seeking doctors for help. Our species only exists because of our ability to reproduce, when it becomes apparent that reproduction for a couple is impossible under regular circumstances, it can have drastic psychological effects on the couple and their family.
Statistics show that around 20 people out of a 100 have trouble getting pregnant, this could be for a variety of reasons, here at National Hospital, we have many different solutions to help couples tackle the issue. Our procedures for infertility are:
Nice IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization)
In-Vitro is Latin for “within the glass”, as such this process involves special glass equipment, essentially the eggs are extracted from the uterus and taken to the lab after which they are introduced to the semen. Many women’s uterus have what doctors call an “inhospitable environment”, which hinders and even stops all sperm from reaching the egg. The controlled environments present in the lab ensures that the insemination of the egg occurs easily. After the Egg has been fertilized it is placed back into the uterus, and the rest of the process of conception is natural.
Intra Uterine Insemination (IUI)
Intra Uterine Insemination or IUI for short is a process which involves semen being taken from the husband after which the semen is analyzed and sent to the laboratory to be processed. After this the processed semen is inserted into the uterus via a special plastic tube to ensure that the sperm meets the egg when it is released. The IUI procedures purpose is to increase the chances of pregnancy significantly for couples that are struggling to conceive. The semen is processed slightly to increase its quality, once again to ensure that there is a higher chance of success. IUI has a relatively high rate of success and most couples are happy with the results.
This procedure is done when the female partner has infertility issues, the procedure is not suitable for men who also have fertility issues, and there are other procedures which can be opted for in such a case.
Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection
Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection or ICSI for short is a procedure which involves embryologists injecting sperm straight into the eggs. This of course is done in labs under a controlled environment and the sperm and eggs are extracted from their respected hosts. Unlike In-Vitro Fertilization which lets the process occur naturally, embryologists use special tools to ensure that the sperm is inserted into the egg and that fertilization takes place. This method is used when there is a problem with the male partner, the majority cases that opt for this procedure have low sperm counts, and this procedure requires very low amounts of sperm cells to be carried out successfully. The chances for the egg to be fertilized however are moderate as the process of fertilization itself on a cellular level is still carried out naturally by the egg and sperm cell, but for couples that can’t conceive, it is often the best hope to conceive and start a family.
There are many other procedures as well, all with the best tools and equipment currently available in the market, we ensure that our quality is second to none with the concluding goal of giving our patients the best treatment possible.
